That’s a great insight. I think that one of the best things youth can learn from Scouting is that things don’t always go as planned, but that is OK.

The audience will never know the difference.

Comment on Earning All 138 Merit Badges: Planning for Success by Donne Strong https://scoutermom.com/17803/earning-all-merit-badges/#comment-543879 Mon, 30 Jun 2025 16:50:50 +0000 https://scoutermom.com/?p=17803#comment-543879 I am a merit badge counselor. I don’t require the workbooks, and am not really interested in checking them unless there is something special a scout wants to share. I do recommend using them for notes and keeping them for future reference. It makes it easier for them to track what they have completed and what they still need to do to finish a badge.

You should always follow your council’s directions over the workbooks. The workbooks are not official materials and are not necessarily current.

I am teaching the first aid merit badge to our troop and am slightly confused about the
CPR section of the badge. The latest workbook is from 2023 and it states that the CPR portion must be taught by
someone that is a trained CPR instructor. When I emailed our council, they said that is can be taught by anyone
with a knowledge of CPR. What is correct?

Cub Scouts can’t earn merit badges, so he will have to wait until he crosses over to a Scouts BSA troop to earn the badge. But your local council might have other activities. I recommend you call them and see if they have a STEM program or STEM coordinator. For example, our council has a STEM van which includes some age appropriate robotics activities. We rented it for a pack meeting. And I know there are cooperative programs between our council STEM program and local businesses. So I think your council, or maybe even your district, would be a good place to ask questions.

His sister has recently crossed over and we have been discussing the possible badges for her to earn. He has shown great interest in this badge. I have read online that he can begin earning merit badges but then I am being told I can pay for the class, but he cannot participate, which has discouraged him. Knowing about this badge, what is your recommendation on teaching him about this?

Hello all,

Due to several recent emails I received, I just wanted to update this to say that the effort ended some time in 2024. All told, I was able to provide 18 pounds of grommets to be used to make the bell. Thank you to all who participated!

Comment on Coin Collecting Merit Badge for 2025: Free Resources and Answers by Jon Melick https://scoutermom.com/25324/coin-collecting-merit-badge/#comment-490029 Thu, 27 Mar 2025 02:45:38 +0000 https://scoutermom.com/?p=25324#comment-490029 As a coin collector with 65 years in the hobby, having earned this badge in February of 1965, and having been a counselor for this badge for the last 43 years, I am appalled at the way that the requirements for this badge have been dumbed down to a level better suited to a Bear or Webelos Scout. No longer does a Scout have to: explain how to grade coins and show five examples of the same coin in different grades; use one of the available display methods to mount and display their coins; know how to use a US or foreign coin catalog, or read a numismatic periodical and report on its contents; collect a type set of modern US coins; define “legal Tender,” and describe the Federal Reserve’s role in maintaining the money supply; or (choose one) collect and identify 50 foreign coins from at least 10 different countries, identify 20 bank notes from at least five different countries, collect and identify 15 different tokens or medals, or since the year of their birth, collect a date set of a single type of coin. Now, a Scout can literally raid the family change jar, or visit the local bank, throw the necessary coins into a plastic bag, and ask family members for any leftover coins from trips outside the US, and call it a “coin collection.” Lest you think that I am exaggerating, I have had to do this more than once since the revision.

My solution is simple: before beginning the counseling session, I tell the Scout that, while I MAY NOT add to or subtract from the requirements as written, I will feel that I am cheating the Scout if I don’t show them how to perform basic coin grading, acquaint them with the location of mintmarks, show them how to use catalogs, and look through a numismatic periodical. If they decline all this, I make sure to tell the Scout and their parent(s) that their Scout is setting themselves up to be cheated as they get deeper into the hobby. I will supply them with Indian Head, Wheat and Steel cents, a Buffalo nickel, and as many as 50 different foreign coins. I will then give them enough cardboard 2x2s or Whitman coin folders to mount and display their collection. I will also show them how I do all of these things, and will bring some of my nicest examples to show them.

I also allow them to select two envelopes from my “GRAB BAG.” I have all sorts of treasures in there, including a tiny replica of a gold coin, many silver coins, and some interesting currency (at my last session, a Scout left with a well worn but still recognizable Large Size $1 silver certificate, Series of 1923.

I them to become true coin collectors, and not just Scouts seeking a merit-badge-in-a-day.

It comes from a variety of sources, including the Scouting America website. Many of the US Scouts workbooks are not up to date after the 2025 updates. The links are the ones they use for their most recent versions. They might still be working on them, so eventually the links should show the latest. Scouts should always start with the official requirements though and not a workbook.

Comment on Sustainability Merit Badge for 2025: Free Resources and Answers by cdaschb https://scoutermom.com/25099/sustainability-merit-badge/#comment-474689 Mon, 10 Feb 2025 16:23:45 +0000 https://scoutermom.com/?p=25099#comment-474689 Good Questions !! SUSTAINABILITY MB was approved in 2013. I believe its promoters and supporters thought ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE MB did not go far enough promoting a more active role in conservation?… Environmental Science MB came out in 1972 and became Eagle-Required, demoting Soil and Water Conservation MB (originally named Soil Conservation in 1952) which I took in 1961!
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE MB has had a MAJOR REVISION on Jan 1, 2025 updating and revising ALL of its 11 Requirements ! …I teach Env. Sci. MB and find it much simplified… and (to my thinking) a bit easier in the Eagle-Choice between it and Sustainability… The 2024 Merit Badge Rankings will be published in a few weeks… how a new MB is approved requires a kind of coalition of sponsors to petition BSA National… then a kind of demonstrative survey-testing… I’ll POST MORE DETAILS here later this week. And I’m not an “insider”… just an MBC with a seat in the bleachers for 60 years… Charlie Daschbach MD

These offerings are most likely done under Adult Supervision. Requirement #3 states that …”Rocket must be built to meet the safety code of the National Association of Rocketry”… HOWEVER the NAR’s SAFETY CODE does not specify that children under 18 should ALWAYS BE UNDER ADULT SUPERVISION. https://www.nar.org/ModelRocketSafetyCode

Comment on Robotics Merit Badge for 2025 by cdaschb https://scoutermom.com/25172/robotics-merit-badge-helps-and-documents/#comment-474232 Sun, 09 Feb 2025 03:52:25 +0000 https://scoutermom.com/?p=25172#comment-474232 Requirement #4 Design, Build, Program, Test can be pretty daunting for some Scouts.

1. I ask an interested scout or group of Scouts if they have a ROBOTICS CLUB or ROBOTICS CLASS at their School and can they join. The MBC is permitted to have Teachers or Professionals assist with a MB. Some Teachers may also be reluctant, thinking they may be assuming the Responsibility or Authority for the MB and I like to send them a letter or Email explaining the MB, and that working with Scouts can enhance their recruitment of students to join… and that is MY Responsibility for the MB.

2. “DESIGN” and “PROGRAM” for the Robot is debated in the MB Blogs between the “Purists” who think the Scout should Design it from SCRATCH and write the Program themselves… and the “Pragmatists” who find the commercial Robot Kits very acceptable… and can be easy with good instructions…but perhaps for some Scouts even the instructions may be difficult. MOST GOOD ROBOT COMPANIES WILL HAVE A WEBSITE and a CHAT FUNCTION to ASK QUESTIONS as well as a 1-800 number.

3. Most Merit Badges have associated COSTS depending on their Requirements… Parents / Scouts must take ito consideration the SKILL of their Scout before purchasing one that meets the Requirements of SENSING and PROGRAMMING (#4a) and 2 DEGREES OF FREEDOM / MOVEMENT (4b). Programmable Robots for children from 8-12 years can be found for $50-$80 … running as high as $150-$350 !! I have found that most Scouts who have some experience with LEGO-type products do well…

4. RE-USE? Some “Robot Camps” will use higher-end expensive Robot Kits… BUT have the Student or Team COMPLETELY DISASSEMBLE the KIT and place back in its box for future use! –> MIGHT A TROOP CONSIDER BUYING A ROBOT for re-use by other Troop Scouts?

5. Most Programmable Robots are coded / programmed VIA an APP… usually on a smartphone or tablet or a program for a PC or Mac… parents / scouts should be aware of that !

I hope I have not made this Merit Badge sound too complicated !!

And these comments are from only ONE MBC… I’m sure some may take exceptions to my comments… and I WELCOME Comments and Constructive Criticism !

Good luck facilitating your Scouts, Patrols, and Troops with this “modern” Merit Badge !!
